GAC Coach Johnathan Meets Ninja Warrior Stars
June 28, 2019

We sent one of our Ninja Coaches, Jonathan Dotter, to the Flipfest Camp in Crossville, Tennessee to learn, grow, and share his knowledge with others at NinjaFest. Not only did this awesome place allow him to meet other students and instructors from all over the country, but it also put him right next to American Ninja Warrior competitors like Grant McCartney and Spencer Johnson!

These two all-stars were guest coaches at FlipFest, an Olympian-run gymnastics and ninja camp that brings in the world's best elite athletes every summer to help teach skills and inspire passion in the campers. Even Katelyn Ohashi made an appearance this summer.

Check Out the GAC Bike Rodeo!
June 25, 2019

Check out the GAC Bike Rodeo!

There's a rodeo this summer at the Gymnastics Academy of Charleston! And we know what you're thinking: where on earth are we going to keep all of the animals? Well don't worry, because this rodeo is full of bikes, tricycles, and scooters! The GAC Bike Rodeo is a new, awesome addition to our summer camp fun-tastic lineup, and we think the kids have loved it so far.

The "rodeo" is an obstacle course set up in our parking lot, complete with twists and turns, tunnels and train tracks, and more. There are also plenty of road signs up so that we can teach the children about what those signs mean and how they affect the flow of traffic. And helmets are, of course, a must! To learn more about the Bike Rodeo and our other awesome summer camp activities, call us at 843-856-2200.

PEYTON LITTLE SETS GAC SCORE RECORD
April 03, 2019

Highest Score to date for any GAC Gymnast!

The highest possible score an Xcel Bronze gymnast can receive on any event is a 10.0. This is the score of a truly perfect routine, and they are as rare as you would expect, if not moreso. GAC athletes have gotten close with their own near-perfect routines; this year alone we have seen 9.7, 9.8, and even a 9.825. But no other gymnast in GAC history to date has achieved what Peyton Little did at the 2019 Spring Break Fun Meet.

Her score of 9.9 put her on top of the GAC record book with the higest score any of our gymnasts has ever achieved at a meet. Well done, Peyton!

Sophia Schimpf Makes TOPS A Camp
December 20, 2018

Congratulations to our own Sophia Schimpf for making TOPS National A Camp! (This is a BIG deal)

The Talent Opportunity Program is designed to find young, talented gymnasts, ages 7-10, to mold into the future stars of USA gymnastics.  During the summer, these gymnasts are tested on strength and skills in each state set by the national TOPS Program leaders.  Examples of these strength tests include a timed 12 foot rope climb in which they must hold their legs up in a pike position above their hips, 10 straddle presses in a row, and a 30 second handstand hold.  Once the summer is over, the scores are tallied and if the gymnast is in the top percentage in their state, they are invited to participate in the TOPS National Test in October.  This test requires more difficult skills than the state testing. From there, the top 50 scores in the entire country get invited to TOPS A Camp and the next 65 are invited to TOPS B Camp, both of which are in December.

This year, Sophia had the privilege to attend TOPS A Camp at Flipfest in Crossville, Tennessee!  While there, the coaches who mold the National Team and Olympians educate the coaches and get to know the gymnasts while helping these kids understand the expectations set to become a high level gymnast.  The schedule during these camps are exhausting and rewarding, with two practices a day and the expert knowledge from the USA National Team coaches on all events.  It isn’t only hard work though, with the kids being able to room in a cabin with other kids their age to make friends, decorating t-shirts that the National Team coaches get to see, and creating a skit they perform at the end of the last practice of camp. Many memories are made and so much knowledge is gained by all who attend these camps.

We couldn’t be more proud of Sophia for representing our gym in such a high level environment with very talented gymnasts from all over the country!  She loved being chosen to show drills to her workout group and learning new skills.  She shined brightly on beam and enjoyed the challenge of adapting to new corrections quickly.  All in all, Sophia learned a lot and had so much fun at her first TOPS National A Camp!

Lvl 10 Ashley Walker to go to Presbyterian College!
November 18, 2018

Our very own Ashley Walker has been given a scholarship spot on the Presbyterian College Acrobatics & Tumbling team! From a Level 10 gymnast with GAC to a competitive collegiate athlete, Ashley has earned every bit of her success; we are exceedingly proud of this accomplishment. Congratulations, Ashley!! Go PC Bluehose!

Acrobatics & Tumbling, a discipline of USA Gymnastics, is the evolution of different forms of gymnastics and involves tumbling, tosses, and acrobatic lifts and pyramids. Teams participate in head-to-head competition and are scored in six events, including Compulsory, Acro, Pyramid, Toss, Tumbling, and Team.

Ashely Walker with her family, and with her GAC teammates

Over 300 student-athletes competed in acrobatics & tumbling at the collegiate varsity level during the 2017 season.  Presbyterian College is joining the Division 1 competitive level, alongside other current members of NCATA like Baylor, Oregon, and Quinnipiac universities.

GAC's New Ninja Course!
September 06, 2018

The Gymnastics Academy of Charleston has launched its new recreational program, "GAC Ultimate Ninja". So we thought we'd launch a new, next-level obstacle course to go along with it! This challenging setup is nearly 30 feet long, and is high customizable, allowing our staff to change the order and arrangement of it's various components on a monthly basis. Ninjas will have to balance, swing, hang, jump, climb, and more if they want to make it across without falling off onto our soft crash mats below. And there are paths that work for all ages and skill levels.

The good news doesn't stop there either, because there are more future additions to this ninja course in the works. GAC intends to add a cargo net at one end and a miniature rock wall at the other. To sign up for ninja classes at our gym, head to our GAC Ultimate Ninja webpage and check out our available classes!

*Permanent crash mats and padding for the metal support beams will all be in place during use of this new Ultimate Ninja apparatus

Adults Can Tumble Too!
July 02, 2018

There are plenty of sports that people say you're never too old to participate in: tennis, biking, swimming, golf, and more. Gymastnastics, however, has typically been seen as well outside that group of adult sports....WRONG! Adults can tumble too and our Sunday sessions with Coach Tim are showing it.

For the past few years, in place of official adult gymnastics classes, GAC has allowed one of it's coaches to hold open format privates for adult members of the Charleston community, and we've seen an enormous spectrum of people come in. There have been minor league baseball players and rock climbers, pole fitness enthusiasts and Crossfit athletes, past gymnasts and people who have never tumbled a single time in their lives, and plenty others.

Any adults who wish to join in should get in touch with Coach Tim at GAC, as some weekends he is out of town and the session is cancelled. The only financial requirements are a $60/yr GAC membership, and a payment to Coach Tim of $10 per session attended (all of which goes to charity). So if you're looking to get better body awareness, learn an old skill, take on the challenge of a new one, or just get a good workout in, join us on Sundays at 11 AM at GAC.

15 adults, our largest Sunday session group, came in to tumble on July 1st, 2018!

The New Fence at GAC
May 22, 2018

Maybe you've seen the yellow tape across the space on the left side of our building lately. In case you've been wondering what's happening back there, GAC is currently putting in a fenced-in area next to our gym for summer campers to utilize in the months to come! This area has several picnic tables so that children can eat their snacks, possibly do arts and crafts, or spend some supervised time outside when the weather is nice.

This area will likely also be available to our patrons and gymnasts during the rest of the year, weather permitting!

Saying Goodbye to Coach Bobbie
May 04, 2018

GAC is so sad to say goodbye to Coach Bobbie, who has reached the end of her time with our gym. In the near future, Bobbie will be moving back to Chicago, IL, to be much closer to her family. She will, however, be coaching at Legacy Elite gym, and will continue to work in physical therapy.

Coach Bobbie joined GAC's staff in July of 2014 and has had a wonderful four years with our one-of-a-kind gym. She says that "leaving here has been one of the hardest decisions she's ever made, but there is nothing quite like family." Of course, she will miss her gym family, and her favorite thing about her time with us was the girls she coached and the friends she made. She is also incredibly grateful for the guidance in improving her coaching abilities and skills.

We could not be more grateful for her years of instruction and passion, and we plan to hold her to her word that she "plans to return frequently to visit"!

New Equipment at GAC: Handstand Trainer
April 03, 2018

The Gymnastics Academy of Charleston is pleased to announce that it has acquired yet another high quality piece of gym equipment that will greatly help to further the skill progressions of our gymnasts! This bouncing handstand trainer is currently set up in the back up the gym behind the pit bars, and it can be used for a wide variety of drills and skills. At its core the trainer is meant to increase confidence and ability surrounding handstands, but that single skill is entirely integral to every gymnastics event.

Bouncing their legs off of the padded elastic bands that stretch across the trainer, our boys and girls will be able to practice basic handstand control, body awareness, cast handstand shapes, pirhouette drills, blind change drills, and much more! We hope to continue to use our talented coaching staff, high-quality equipment, and legacy of excellence to bring your children the best gymnastics experience that GAC has to offer.

From Granite to Gold
March 14, 2018

Our very own Lexi Granite has had a truly remarkable meet season this year; one that is well worth a place in the spotlight. At GAC's annual "Palmetto Patriots Classic" meet, Lexi managed to sweep the board with a gold medal on every event, as well as the All-Around gold. If this accomplishment wasn't impressive enough by itself, Lexi managed to pull off the same feat at both the Charleston Cup meet in North Charleston and the Courtney Kupets Pink Invitational in Savannah, Georgia. Furthermore, her performance at the Charleston Cup put her in the Nation's Top 100 gymnasts at her competitive level for both Floor and All-Around. GAC is extremely proud of her hard work and the achievements that have followed!

Lexi competed as a Level 5 gymnast this year, and she will be moving up to Level 7 next year.

Girls Gymnastics Team
August 07, 2014

GAC's girls competitive gymnastics team is currently full. If you are considering a move to our gym, please contact us with questions. We suggest you register online for the level your child currently competes and you will be wait listed. This is suggested if you wish to be considered for the 2015-2016 season so that any athletes can be considered in the order in which they registered. You will not be charged to wait list and you can ask to be removed at any point. Coach Valerie also requests that you contact her immediately following your state meet for confirmation and consideration. Thank you for your understanding and know that any athlete registered is confidential. Our boys team is still open.
